कैसा हो अगर बिना बिजली और बर्फ सब्जियों और फलों को 30 दिन तक ताजा रखा जा सके? ऐसा संभव है क्योंकि भागलपुर के रहने वाले आईआईटी (IIT) ग्रेजुएट निक्की कुमार झा और उनकी बहन रश्मि झा ने सब्जीकोठी नाम का डिवाइस बनाया है। यह अनोखा फ्रिज एक लीटर पानी और सौर ऊर्जा से सब्जियों की उम्र बढ़ा सकता है। यही बात, इसे एक आम फ्रिज के मुकाबले बेहतर बनाती है।
Nikki Kumar Jha and his sister Rashmi Jha are the brains behind the Saptkrishi-a start-up revolutionising the way it saves farmer produce from wastage. Sabjikothi is IIT Kanpur incubated start-up co-founded by the Jha sibling. At 25 years old, Nikki holds a master’s in Ecology and Environment Science from Nalanda University. Rashmi is a biotechnologist by qualification. In conversation with The EarthView, Nikki discussed Saptkrishi, Sabjikothi, India’s farmer community struggles, his other start-up and many more things.

Can you imagine a world that need not worry about sky-rocketing prices of fruits and vegetables? Simply due to easy availability of modern devices that support extremely short shelf life of horticultural and floricultural produce? It is a known fact that 70% of the entire horticultural produce, amounting to about 105 metric tonnes gets lost every year, accounting for 40% of the total cost. As a result, fruit and vegetable prices are twice of what they would be otherwise.
Saptkrishi, a startup in Bihar, founded by Nikky Kumar Jha and his younger sister, Rashmi Jha, have devised an IoT technology — the Sabjikothi — which is helping farmers store their produce for longer while also keeping them fresh.
NEW YORK (April 30, 2023) – The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has
announced the regional winners of the 2024 ASME Innovation Showcase (ISHOW), the prestigious
international accelerator of hardware-led social innovation. Seven social ventures from throughout India
pitched their innovative solutions and participated in an extensive design and engineering review with
expert judges April 24 and 25 in Chennai. Three regional winners were selected to join the 2024 ASME
ISHOW cohort and announced at an invitation-only awards ceremony. They will receive a share of
$30,000 in grant awards and technical support to help bring their impactful innovations to market.
India is the second-largest producer of fruits and vegetables
in the world. However, more than 30 percent of horticultural
produce is wasted due to inadequate logistical support, lack of
refrigerated storage, supply chain bottlenecks, poor transport,
and underdeveloped marketing channels. Moreover, the
open transportation of horticulture produce increases the
pathogenic load and reduces the water content, resulting in
a direct economic loss to farmers/vendors and adding up to
the waste. The current cold chain solutions are expensive and
cause damage to the environment due to significant energy
consumption and the refrigerants used.
